Harvey B. Gantt Center of Charlotte, NC

Located in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture stands as a testament to the city’s rich Black heritage and a beacon for artistic expression. Named after Harvey Bernard Gantt, Charlotte’s first African American mayor and a pioneering architect, the center embodies the resilience, creativity, and contributions of African Americans in the Carolinas and beyond.

A Vision Rooted in History

The roots of the Gantt Center trace back to 1974 with the establishment of the Afro-American Cultural Center, a space dedicated to preserving Black history and culture. Over the years, as Charlotte grew into a dynamic metropolis, so did the aspirations for a larger, more prominent home for African American art and history. In 2009, those aspirations were realized with the opening of the Gantt Center, a stunning 46,500-square-foot facility designed by architect Phil Freelon, known for his work on the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

A Space for Creativity and Reflection

From the moment visitors step inside, they are immersed in an experience that blends contemporary artistic expression with deep historical significance. The Gantt Center hosts rotating art exhibitions, cultural events, and educational programs, showcasing the works of both emerging and renowned Black artists.

One of the center’s hallmarks is its commitment to storytelling—whether through vibrant paintings, thought-provoking sculptures, or multimedia installations. The exhibitions often explore themes of racial identity, social justice, and the African diaspora, sparking meaningful conversations that resonate across generations.

More Than a Museum

Beyond its galleries, the Harvey B. Gantt Center serves as a community hub. It offers film screenings, dance performances, spoken-word events, and lectures featuring influential Black scholars and creatives. Programs such as Gantt After Dark bring the space to life in the evenings, blending art with live music, cocktails, and networking opportunities.

Educational outreach is also central to the center’s mission, providing youth workshops, school partnerships, and mentorship programs aimed at inspiring the next generation of artists and thinkers.
