As Black History Month unfolds, Mert’s Heart and Soul offers more than just a meal; it provides an immersive experience into African American culinary traditions and heritage. Visitors are invited to savor dishes deeply rooted in Black culture, such as shrimp and grits, collard greens, and the signature Soul Rolls. Dining at Mert’s during this month serves as a flavorful homage to the rich history and enduring contributions of African American communities. 

A Culinary Journey Rooted in Passion

in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, Mert’s Heart and Soul stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Southern cuisine and community spirit. Established in 1998 by James and Renee’ Bazzelle, the restaurant has become a cornerstone for both locals and visitors seeking authentic Low Country and Gullah-inspired dishes.

James Bazzelle, a native of Athens, Georgia, discovered his culinary passion during high school. Encouraged by his home economics teacher, he pursued an Associate’s Degree in Food Service Management from the Vocational College of Athens. After honing his skills in various establishments across Georgia, James, alongside his wife Renee’, relocated to Charlotte in 1991. There, they launched Ga. Catering, laying the foundation for their future endeavors. In 1996, they opened their first restaurant, Ga. on Tryon, which paved the way for Mert’s Heart and Soul two years later. 

A Hub for Community & Culture

Beyond its delectable offerings, Mert’s has solidified its role as a cultural and communal hub. The walls of the restaurant are adorned with signed posters from Broadway touring casts, a tradition that began in 2003 with the national tour of “The Lion King.” This collection reflects Mert’s reputation as a favored dining spot for performers and theater enthusiasts alike. 

The Bazzelles’ commitment to community extends beyond their restaurant’s doors. They actively engage in local initiatives, from conducting cooking demonstrations at libraries to supporting public school fundraisers and providing meals for mentorship programs and shelters. Their unwavering dedication underscores the restaurant’s mission to nourish both body and soul. 

In essence, Mert’s Heart and Soul is more than a restaurant; it’s a celebration of heritage, community, and the timeless flavors that bind us together.
