Oh My Soul Vegan Restaurant, Charlotte,NC
In the heart of Charlotte’s vibrant NoDa neighborhood stands Oh My Soul, a distinctive vegan restaurant that has become a beacon of compassion and culinary innovation. Oh My Soul opened its doors in early 2020, marking NoDa’s first 100% vegan restaurant. The owner is South African natives Richard and Tallulah Duffin, along with Jake Davies, the trio brought their rich cultural heritage and a deep commitment to animal welfare to the Queen City. Their journey began years prior when Jake relocated to Charlotte, eventually inspiring the Duffins to join him and introduce their unique vision to the community.
The Food
The menu is a vibrant tapestry of flavors, offering plant-based renditions of both American and South African classics. Diners can indulge in dishes like vegan ribs, chicken, and fish, as well as waffles, cheesecake, and milkshakes. The restaurant’s philosophy centers on kindness and empathy, aiming to provide delicious, cruelty-free options that appeal to vegans and non-vegans alike.
A Vegan Diet
A vegan diet is a way of eating that excludes all animal products. This means no meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, or any other products derived from animals, such as gelatin or honey. Instead, a vegan diet is plant-based, focusing on foods like:
• Fruits and vegetables
• Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas)
• Grains (rice, quinoa, oats, etc.)
• Nuts and seeds
• Plant-based oils (olive oil, coconut oil, etc.)
• Plant-based dairy alternatives (almond milk, soy cheese, coconut yogurt, etc.)
Many people choose a vegan diet for ethical, environmental, or health reasons. It can provide all essential nutrients if properly planned, but vegans need to pay special attention to nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein.
A Community Involvement
Beyond its culinary offerings, Oh My Soul has woven itself into the fabric of the NoDa community. The establishment boasts a welcoming outdoor patio shaded by a century-old oak tree, creating a serene environment for patrons and their pets. Live music events and a vibrant atmosphere make it a beloved gathering spot. The owners’ dedication to the principle of “Ubuntu”—the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity—is evident in their community initiatives. Each month, the restaurant supports various animal sanctuaries and local charities, encouraging patrons to round up their totals to benefit these causes.
Oh My Soul’s influence extends beyond its menu; it has become a catalyst for promoting veganism and compassionate living in Charlotte. By offering diverse and flavorful plant-based dishes, the restaurant has made veganism accessible and appealing, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose among its patrons. Its presence in NoDa not only enriches the local dining scene but also embodies a commitment to kindness, sustainability, and cultural diversity.
